Background![]() Tasovice is a small town in the Moravian area of the Czech Republic. It is northwest of Brno*. In 1906 it would have been part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. There was massive immigration from this area to the United States at this time. The immigrants were usually landless peasants at strife with overpopulation, high taxes and high unemployment. The passenger lists through Ellis Island show a Miloslav Corkal arriving on August 11, 1906. He arrived on the Sofia Hohenberg from Trieste. He was 17 years old, single and literate. His nationality was listed as Austrian, his race or people as Bohemian and his last place of residence as Tassovic. He had an onward ticket to Rogers, Nebraska, to visit his uncle Frank Kroupa. He had $12 in his pocket and his fare had been paid for by his uncle. Other Corkals can also be found entering America through Ellis Island. Josef Corkal was from Tasovice, Moravia. His father was Phillip Corkal of Tasovice and he was on his way to visit his brother, Miloslav, in Rogers, Nebraska. The next passenger on the list after Josef Corkal is Vincencia Bockova, also from Tasovice, Austria. ( I have found the ship manifest Josef Corkal - September 23, 2004. He arrived on the Kaiser Auguste Victoria on March 8, 1909. I will post the originals.) Marie Corkal is from Zaboviesky, Moravia. Her father is Frantisek Corkal
of Zaboviesky, Moravia. She is 28 and on her way to Frances, New Jersey. Her
name has been crossed out as Veronika Corkal is 45 years old (1867) and on her way to Schuyler, Nebraska to visit her brother, Frank Kroupa. I think there is a high probability she is related, but I have difficulty figuring out the relationship. (*There is some debate as to which Tasovice is correct see confusing stuff...) |
