1906 - 1913Miloslav lived with his uncle on the farm in Nebraska.
The 1910 US Census records
show M.S. Corkal working as a hired man in Butler County, Nebraska. He is 20
years old and of Moravian descent. This is adjacent to Colfax County.
Josef Corkal arrived on the
Kaiserin Auguste Victoria
through Ellis Island on March 8, 1909. He was 16 years old, a farm labourer
and on his way to Rogers Nebraska to visit his brother Miroslav. His fare
had been paid for by his brother. He was from Tasovice, Moravia and his
father was Phillip Corkal. The next passenger on the list after Josef Corkal
was Vincenia Bockova. She was 19 years old, from Tasovice, Moravia and on
her way to Rogers Nebraska. Oral family history has it that Miroslav and his
wife had been high school sweethearts in Tasovice. He sent for her when he
had saved enough money.
It is assumed Miroslav married Vincencia Bockova, the passenger traveling
with Josef Corkal. The
marriage records
from Colfax County, Nebraska show M.S. Corkal marrying Vinci Bosek. The
date is not recorded on this source. (Will someone
please pick up an original copy of this marriage certificate).
The actual spelling in the Ellis Island files is Bočková.
This would make the "č" soft. The "ova" would probably
be removed as it denoted a female. This would make the pronunciation
something like Bosek or Bocek. It is not that great a stretch that Vincencia
Bočková and Vinci Bosek are one and
the same person. The marriage certificate would probably go a long way in
clearing up some of this confusion.
Josef Corkal is probably listed in the 1910 US
Census in Maple Creek Township, Colfax County, Nebraska as
Jos. Svrkal.
I am unable to find any record of Vincenia Bockova in the 1910 US Census.
